I began documenting the Washington, DC neighborhood of Mount Pleasant when I moved into the community in 1989. As a former photographer for local papers, I covered events in this Northwest DC community on a regular basis -- from the riots that occured here in 1991 to annual neighborhood festivals.

I also worked with young people in the neighborhood, forming a photography program at a local elementary School. This program resulted in two major student-produced exhibits showing their documentation of the neighborhood.

Mount Pleasant is one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in DC. Although it is know as the seat of the District's Latino community, it is also home to many white and black families, newly arrived African and Vietnamese immigrants, and young people. It is a neighborhood of grand historic mansions and mom-and-pop restaurants. Its tree-lined streets sit behind Rock Creek Park and the National Zoo.
