The images in this exhibit are the result of three trips I have
made to the West African country of Ghana.
I made my first trip In 1995, spending one month documenting the
art of Kente Weaving for the book, Master
Weaver from Ghana. Published in 1995 by Louise Meyer and Bobbo
Ahiagble, this book tells the story of passing the tradition of
Kente Weaving from father to son. After spending one week learning
to weave, I traveled to weaving villages throughout the Denu region
on the Southeast coast of the country. I plan to continue this project
in Mali, documenting traditional weavers, spinners and textile artists.
I traveled to the country again in 1999 to participate in Kiddafest,
an international children's festival sponsored by the National Theatre
of Ghana. During the event, I displayed an exhibition of my images
of children, and taught a photography workshop for young people
participating in the festival.
In 2001, I was asked to return to Ghana to document the city of
Accra, Ghana's capital, for a UNESCO funded book and exhibition.
This project enabled me to explore the city beyond the tourist sites,
allowing me to concentrate on aspects of Ghanaian life many visitors
rarely have a chance to see.
The images in these galleries represent a very small portion of
the images I shot while working on these projects.
